Rakhial, Bapunagar under seige by drug traffickers

Drug traffickers are individuals or groups involved in the illegal trade of drugs across various regions and borders. They play a central role in the distribution and sale of illicit substances, often creating significant societal and legal problems. Here’s a breakdown of key points related to drug traffickers:

Key Characteristics and Activities of Drug Traffickers:

  1. Organized Criminal Networks:
    • Drug trafficking is typically conducted by well-established criminal organizations, sometimes involving cartels or syndicates. These groups are highly organized, with defined roles for various members (e.g., suppliers, distributors, couriers, and enforcers).
  2. Types of Drugs:
    • Traffickers deal with a variety of illegal substances, including cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana, and synthetic drugs. Some trafficking networks specialize in specific drugs, while others deal in multiple substances.
  3. Transportation and Smuggling:
    • Drug traffickers use various methods to smuggle drugs across borders. These can include hidden compartments in vehicles, shipping containers, air freight, human couriers (often referred to as “mules”), and even drones. Common trafficking routes span continents, with drugs being transported from producer countries (e.g., Colombia for cocaine, Afghanistan for opium) to consumer countries (e.g., the U.S., Europe).
  4. Money Laundering:
    • The profits from drug trafficking are enormous, and traffickers engage in money laundering to hide the origins of these funds. They use methods like shell companies, real estate investments, casinos, and offshore accounts to clean the drug money and integrate it into the legitimate economy.
  5. Violence and Corruption:
    • Drug traffickers often use violence to enforce their control over territories, intimidate competitors, and protect their operations. Corruption within law enforcement, customs, and government agencies is common, as traffickers bribe officials to avoid detection and prosecution.
  6. Impact on Communities:
    • Drug trafficking can have severe social consequences. It fosters addiction, violence, and insecurity within communities, and it undermines public trust in authorities. In regions where trafficking is rampant, it often leads to weakened rule of law and widespread crime.
  7. Law Enforcement and Countermeasures:
    • Authorities around the world, including local police, national forces, and international organizations like Interpol and UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime), work tirelessly to dismantle trafficking networks. Efforts include intelligence sharing, undercover operations, and interdiction operations to seize drugs before they reach their destination.
  8. Trends in Drug Trafficking:
    • Trafficking methods and drugs evolve over time. For instance, the rise of synthetic drugs like fentanyl, which is much more potent than traditional opioids, has led to new challenges in drug trafficking and enforcement.
  9. International Cooperation:
    • Because drug trafficking often spans multiple countries, international cooperation is crucial for tackling the problem. Multinational agreements and operations, such as the Merida Initiative in North America or joint operations between U.S. and Mexico forces, help target transnational traffickers.
  10. Legal and Ethical Issues:
  • While drug trafficking is illegal, some countries have moved toward decriminalizing or legalizing certain drugs (such as marijuana), sparking debates about the effectiveness of punitive measures versus regulatory approaches.

The eastern part of the city now resembles the bad bad west if the type and number of serious incidents being reported is anything to go by. In the latest embarrassment for the city police, six goons brandishing swords and knives terrorized the entire Rakhial area on Wednesday night in full public view. As if that was not enough, they even assaulted a police team that tried to stop them.

On Wednesday night, Shaikh, a resident of Rakhial, and his cousin were standing near a hotel in Rakhial when Sarvar alias Kadva and others approached, brandishing swords and knives. They asked Shaikh about his brother, Salman. When the former refused to entertain the latter, Kadva attacked Shaikh with a sword. He, however, dodged the attack.

A police van that was on patrolling duty soon reached the spot but the goons brandished the weapons and forced the cops to step back even. It took the arrival of the Crime Branch to bring the situation under control.

According to police sources, Salman and Sarvar were friends but sometime ago Sarvar and Fazal had posted obscene comments about Salman’s wife. This led to a quarrel between Sarvar and Salman. About a week ago, Sarvar and his men came to the same place with knives but were not able find Salman. They again came down on Wednesday night and terrorised the area.

Following the incident, city police commissioner GS Malik ordered an inquiry against the police inspectors of Rakhial and Bapunagar police stations. The local cops later booked Kadva, Fazal, Anni Rajput, Altaf alias Jumman, Mehfooz, and Samir alias Chikna under charges of attempted murder. Of these, Samir alias Chikna has been arrested, while Fazal, who was on the run, was stabbed in another gang war that took place in Ramol on Thursday. The individual who stabbed Fazal was identified as Junaid. Fazal was later detained by the Crime Branch while injured and was rushed for treatment.
